my computer has been really slow lately how would i go about reformatting? my friend says its to delete all of your things but start over andthere are a lot of things i want to save on my computer. most of it takes up a lot of space so it would not all fit onto a disk. how would go about reformatting WHILE saving some files?

Haha. No.

Reformatting is the techincal term for deleting everything. So it means that you have to find a way to save all of your data. DVD burners and DVD media are getting really cheap these days. You can fit a lot of data into a few 4.7GB DVD disks.

Otherwise, you could also buy a second hard drive for data backup.

IF I WERE YOU I FORGET ALL ABOUT THOSE FILES AND START OUT NEW.I DONT KNOW A WAY TO SAVE THE FILES BECAUSE YOUR RE DELETEING EEVRYTHING ON YOUR HARD DRIVE TO IMPROVE YOUR SYSTEM.I WOULD CONSIDER BUYING MORE HARD DRIVE 250GB TOPS OR JUST DELETING ALL THE JUNK AND STARTING OVER

Well you have to save some stuff. Like bill documents, songs, resumes, and photos. You can't use "start over" with photos. There are just somethings you just can't delete. I know because I was pissed off because I forgot to back up my photos and my bookmarks.

Yes. It's the perfect solution!

(Just use an Anti-Virus software while tranfering files... You wouldn't want to put infected files in it.

why not defrag? it frees some space and makes your computer slightly faster. all it does is deletes unused files and moves the other files to other places to help save space (might mess up some of your shortcuts though)

Reformating starts your system from zero. Defragmenting removes fragments but doesn't cure WinRot, spyware, viruses or any other problems in the operating systems.

Uhh... It does nothing of that. It moves the files internally within the filesystem. It does not delete any files, fiddle with shortcuts nor give you more space. In fact, the only thing you experience after defragmenting is better hard drive performance.
